Plan to Celebrate Middle Level Education Month
The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the parent organization of NASC, has joined with several organizations to declare March the official month to celebrate middle level education. The celebration is an excellent opportunity for NASC members to showcase and raise awareness of the value and importance of fostering the development of student council leaders in middle level schools. Here are a few ideas to recognize the month:
- Do a presentation about middle level leadership to the elementary PTA groups.
- Invite high school leaders to be guest speakers during middle level student council meetings.
- Host middle level leaders at a high school student council meeting.
- Sponsor a joint middle level and high school student service project.

National Student Leadership Week 2016: Right Here, Right Now
Have you started making plans to celebrate National Student Leadership Week (NSLW) yet? Held April 17–23, the goal of NSLW is to recognize the student leaders in your school. This year’s theme, “Right Here, Right Now,” acknowledges student leaders’ efforts and dedication to helping to create a positive school climate. Whether it’s giving students a voice, engaging peers in activities and events, or reaching out to serve the community, student leaders are making a difference right here, right now.
This year, in particular, remind your student leaders, school, and community about the value of paying it forward. Participants are encouraged to share updates, videos, and links on social media using #NSLW16 showing how they are making a difference. LEARN MORE

Conference and Workshop Fundraising
Securing financial support to attend student council conferences and training events is a challenge that many NASC advisers face each year. Common costs for student travel include the obvious—transportation, lodging and food, and event registrations. How the adviser and student members approach fundraising efforts can be the difference in reaching financial goals.
NASSP student programs provide a fundraising guide to assist members raising funds to attend the NASC National Conference or one of the LEAD Conferences. Check out the LEAD Conference Guide and see how it can help your council leaders enhance their fundraising efforts.
