St. Nick’s Celebration

Bourgade Catholic High School, AZ

To increase the holiday spirit and feeling of goodwill, we started a Saint Nicholas Day celebration. The student council researched the history of Saint Nicholas, and with the faculty’s approval it was announced that the morning of December 6 (St. Nick’s feast day) students would leave one shoe outside of the classroom during first period. The executive board then traveled around school, sticking a candy cane in each shoe. This was an easy way to make students feel the holiday spirit in our school community.

Counselor’s Week

Roy Martin Middle School, NV

During National Counselor’s Week, the student council officers came up with the theme of “Inside Out” to celebrate our three counselors (grades 6–8). Each officer was in charge of one day of the week and an emotion, and they came up with treats and puns to go with each. Each day the officers delivered the gifts to the counselors and gave them a verbal thank-you, too. The counselors all felt special and appreciated!

Student Council Tips and Tools

Reaching Out in Time of Disaster
Student council leaders are unmatched in their energy to help others. Their passion to give of themselves is at the core of service leadership. In times of disaster, that same passion can sometimes lead to rushed decisions in how the council will render aid. Because post-disaster needs vary depending on the type and scope of a disaster, advisers can provide helpful guidance to students. It is important they learn how to choose disaster relief projects that are most helpful and charities that are reputable. An excellent resource is Charity Navigator, whose website includes information on giving in times of crisis. LEARN MORE »
